On Friday 7th March 2014, 2504 (Archbishop Grimshaw)Squadron hosted a Retirement Presentation Evening in order to bid farewell to two of their officers, CI Ken Richards RAFVR(T) (Ret'd) and
WO Ken Straun.
Although there was no doubt about the evening being a success, the presentation evening exceeded expectations with the presentations and speeches bringing back a flood of memories and a tear to the eye of both CI Ken Richards RAFVR(T) (Ret'd) and WO Ken Straun.
Once everybody was seated, Flt Lt M Aftab RAFVR(T) Officer Commanding of 2504 Squadron, explained the itinerary of the night before explaining the journey which he has gone through alongside the two officers. Along with Flt Lt M Aftab RAFVR(T) many Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing Staff Officers took it in turns to tell their personal experiences with WO Ken Straun and CI Ken Richards RAFVR(T) (Ret'd), dating back to either when they were a cadet or a newly appointed officer. After listening to these stories, it is needless to say that both CI Richards and WO Straun made an impact on many of the people they have come into contact with through the organisation of the Air Training Corps.
After reminiscing, 2504 squadron presented their own form of goodbye, which consisted of a history of the Officers’ time in the Air Training Corps before introducing a video which included personal messages from the cadets. After many laughs, and a few tears, the presentations were finally over and all guests made their way to a buffet before competing in a raffle. After the raffle, various pictures were taken, even if the majority of them consisted of ‘selfies’ with both officers and cadets.
It is safe to say that Warrant Officer Straun and CI Richards have left there mark on the staff and cadets at 2504 (Archbishop Grimshaw) Squadron and their presence will be missed greatly, no walking camps will ever be the same without their expertise and unique charisma. The cadets, staff and civilian committee at 2504 would like to say a huge thank you to both WO Straun and CI Richards and wish them a very happy retirement. Thank You and Good Luck. And also a huge thanks to all family and friends who attended the evening to make it that extra special farewell.
