On Monday 4th February, I received a message from the Corps Sports Officer saying I had been called up for the Corps netball team. I was ecstatic and that Friday, travelled up to RAF Cosford to stay the night before the tournament on the following day. Nine girls made up the Corps team and we all had great fun on the Friday evening getting to know one and other. The Saturday morning was an early start, breakfast and then a training session with the Corps Vets (a team made up of staff within the Air Training Corps). The session gave us all new tips and tricks and enabled us to warm up and play together as a team before the tournament.
After lunch, we warmed up and met the competition - three local teams and the Corps vets. The games were twenty minutes long and our first was against the Barr Beacons, unfortunately the ATC team lost to an incredible and solid side. Our second game was against AMEC ladies, another team from the area, the ATC team were down by four goals at the end of the first half however, turned it around to win the match by four goals!
Our third match, against the Yendys was another tough game that we unfortunately didn't win, but the opposition were a young, speedy, close team and they commented on how good we were only having played together for a few hours! The Corps team's final match was against the Corps Vets, who we really wanted to beat! But knew after the mornings training session that it was unlikely! Both teams played well but the Vets came out on top.
The Corps Vets were the defending champions; however, they lost to Barr Beacons and came second, the ATC team finished fourth in front of AMEC ladies.
Once the games had finished, the Corps Sports Officer, Alex Maddison, presented Barr Beacons with the ATC Challenge Shield and also the Corps team with their Corps blues. We then all went to Finnigans on base for a buffet.
I really enjoyed playing for the Corps netball team, it was a once in a lifetime experience and a true honour. Hopefully I will be back there next year and will make even more new friends!
