On Wednesday 11th December 2013 163 (Coventry Phoenix) Sqn hosted a presentation night, inviting family and friends of all the cadets. There was a great turn out. The special guests of the evening were Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing, Wing Commander S. Iles and 163s Wing Staff Officer, Squadron Leader M.D. Harrison. During the evening, parents were able to view what their children had been up to over the last year. Many of the Cadets were presented with certificates and trophies and five highly deserving cadets we all promoted to Cadet Corporal; Cadet Corporal Sinfield, Ford, David, Mcgranaghan and McDonnell-Devlin all received their new stripes from OC 163 Squadron, Flt lt Rayner.
Throughout the night the presentations were made to the cadets by Flt Lt. Rayner, Sqn Leader Harrison and Wing Commander Iles. The winners of the main trophies were; Best NCO: Sgt Halligan, Sports cadet of the year: Cadet Sinfield and the COs award went to Miss (CI) Bates. The best all round cadet award was unusual this year as, following the merger of 163 & 2438 Squadrons, a cadet from each Squadron was chosen as joint winners; Cadet Shirley & Cadet David. A new trophy was also introduced, The Hardy Cup, in memory of John Hardy, Squadron Treasurer who sadly passed away in 2012. The trophy was awarded in recognition of services to the Squadron, above and beyond expectations and I was honoured to be the winner of this.
To finish off the presentations, bouquets of flowers were given to the Wing Commander to pass to Mrs Iles and 163 Squadron Adjutant Flt lt Sinfield. The final appreciation was given to the CO by Flt lt Sinfield.
After the presentations were complete, the drill hall was open for everyone to look around the displays. There were tables containing pictures of all the activities completed over the last year by the cadets, the 2013 diorama entry and D of E kit. The evening ended with the raffle draw that our guests had kindly participated in.
